After the Ford GT40’s legendary success at Le Mans it was no surprise that it soon became regarded as one of the greatest ever classic sports cars. The cars soon became part of serious car collections worldwide and rarely came to market.  

One prospective owner was renowned race car builder Peter Thorpe of Safir Engineering.  Frustrated in the inability to source a car for his own use, led him to a meeting with John Willment who retained a large selection of original tooling, jigs, spares and plans from the original production run. Negotiations with Ford in Dearborn led to an agreement that Safir Engineering could complete the final 3 of the original ‘run’ chassis numbers (GTP/1087 – GTP/1089)  and then proceed to construct the first of 40 eventual Safir chassis which would carry the chassis number  GTP/1090 – The Safir cars being dubbed the GT40 Mk5.

The car we currently have on offer for sale is Chassis number 1094 which was delivered to its original owner in January 1985. The exterior of the car is finished in Yellow with Black striping; the Zinc coated steel monocoque being finished in Cumulus Grey.

This two owner car features a correct Ford E&F 289 (4.7 litre) Mathwall ME397 V8 fitted with E&F @Big Valve’ Cylinder heads, TWM Throttle bodies with Motec M48 Control, ZF 5DS25/2 5 speed transmission with LSD, AP Racing twin disc clutch, AP 12x1.1 Vented  discs with racing Calipers, Koni 2812 Dampers , Twin Fuel tanks and BRM Magnesium Wheels.
